Former school board member, retired Gilroy police sergeant and practicing lawyer Mark Good has decided to run for the school board, turning what could have been a boring election into a bona fide race.

Good, 50, served on the Gilroy Unified School Board from 1996 to 2000 and decided not to run for a second term given that he was in his third year of law school and gearing up for the bar exam. Prior to his career as an attorney, Good served as a police officer for 18 years, retiring after he was injured on the job, he said.

A graduate of Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Good has “been in Gilroy for 100 years,” he laughed, and put all four of his children though Gilroy public schools. He is the stepfather of Councilman Perry Woodward.

He returned from his annual family vacation in Pismo Beach just in time to submit his papers to the Santa Clara Registrar of Voters. The deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 13.

“I’ve been thinking about running for a long time,” he said. A seasoned trustee, Good knows just how much time serving as a board member takes up.

“That’s why I stayed out of it for eight years,” he said.

“It’s easy to agree with the administration and just nod your head,” he said. “To sit up there and competently respond to the issues, you have no idea how much work is involved.”

Good remembers serving on the board at a time when the district was in “constant turmoil,” he said. “The board was involved in a a lot of hands-on management” while trying to find a superintendent, he said.
