South County Housing Corporation received a $2,800 grant
Wednesday from the Gilroy Foundation.
Gilroy –South County Housing Corporation received a $2,800 grant Wednesday from the Gilroy Foundation.
The funds are earmarked by the foundation for Hurricane Katrina evacuees relocated to Gilroy and living in apartments owned by South County Housing.
“This is another example of the incredible generosity of Gilroy and the Gilroy Foundation,” said Dennis Lalor, Executive Director of South County Housing. “The foundation’s donation will go directly to meet the needs of the Katrina evacuees as they rebuild their lives in California.”
Presenting the funds to Lalor and SCH Neighborhood Development Department Director Aida Zaldivar-Perez were Donna Pray, Gilroy Foundation Executive Director, and Penny Purluss, a foundation board member and Chairwoman of the Foundation’s annual “A Day in the Country” fundraising dinner and auction.
A special desert auction for Katrina relief raised $2,800 by selling four cakes baked and donated by Purluss, Rosalind Farotte, Shawn Moen and Rosemary Calbert.
The Foundation’s charter calls for funds to be used locally, so Foundation officials decided to donate to South County Housing’s efforts to help Katrina evacuees, Pray said. Two evacuees, Alton Chalk and Sandra McGinnis, have relocated to Gilroy and more are anticipated.
In addition to the Gilroy Foundation Grant, South County Housing has also received $6,000 from Gilroy’s South Valley Community Church, $1,000 from Paines Restaurant in Hollister and more than $1,400 raised at a benefit concert organized by the Gilroy Ministerial Association to help local Katrina evacuees.
And Gilroy residents and businesses responded to the evacuees’ plight and donated scores of household and furniture items for Chalk and McGinnis and other Katrina evacuees.
