Free Air and Water After You Fill Up

I’m calling in regards to the light pole at the corner of First
and Eigleberry streets, just outside the Carlson Building.
Light’s out

“I’m calling in regards to the light pole at the corner of First and Eigleberry streets, just outside the Carlson Building. I think it’s pole No. 2377. For a good many weeks now the light has not been working and it’s dangerous crossing at night with no light.

I normally go to the five-o-clock Sunday Mass at church and when I get out it’s on the darkside. I’m handicapped and use a cane so it takes time to cross the street. So I think the city should replace that light fixture.”

Red Phone:

Thank you for bringing light to this dark area in the city. Red Phone contacted City Traffic Engineer Don Dey. He called the city’s street light maintenance contractor to let the know the light needed repair.

The maintenance crew has informed Dey that the street light has been repaired, so you should have well-lit and safe crossing good caller.

free air, water?

“I’d like to make a comment on some of the gas stations around town especially the Chevron on 10th and Monterey streets. The air is supposed to be free, they are supposed to go inside and get a token, I think it’s state law.

I go in there to get air for my bicycle and the guy inside says it’s 50 cents and I told him it’s supposed to be free, it’s a state law. He said he didn’t know anything about that. I was hoping you could put something in the paper so these out-of-town guys will know.”

Red Phone:

Yes good caller you are correct there is a state law, it is Assembly Bill 531, service stations authored by Senator Nell Soto in 1999. The law states that “Every service station in this state to provide, during operating hours, water, compressed air, and a gauge for measuring air pressure, to the public for use in servicing any passenger or commercial vehicle, as defined.” If the station fails to do so they can be fined if the situation isn’t corrected within five consecutive days.

However, according to the state division of measurement standards, gas stations are required to provide air and water for no charge, but only to customers who are buying gasoline or diesel. Their Web site posting says you may have to ask the attendant for a token or to turn the equipment on for you and if they do not there should be a number posted on the equipment to call and file a complaint. The number is 1-800-356-7057 or you can fill out a complaint form online at http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/egov/dms/aw/airwater.asp.

So in actuality nothing is free, you have to buy some fuel to receive “complimentary” air and water, and if you’re not a gas guzzler, well I guess you have to pay to peddle.

Copies of Contracts

I decided to call today concerning the fact the city released the contract of the police chief.

How come there’s no copy of it in the newspaper so general public can learn about it, that’d be nice.

Red Phone:

Good caller ask and you shall receive. Copies of Police Chief Gregg Giusiana and Assistant Chief Lanny Brown’s contract are at the right.
