GILROY – Gaeta’s Ballers earned the Women’s basketball League title Monday with a 39-32 victory over Western Tree Nursery at Solorsano Gymnasium.

Monica Pantoja scored seven of her 11 points in the second half as Gaeta’s Ballers completed a 6-0 second half by turning a 14-14 intermission tie into the seven-point cushion. Gaeta’s also won the first half of play. Western Tree was runner-up in both halves and received the runner-up award.

Chelsea Warner hit four free throws to give Western Tree a 4-0 lead. Amanda Bakker banked in two field goals and Michelle Deleissegues added a layup as Western Tree built a 10-4 edge. Hennessee helped Gaeta’s draw even at the break with a three-point field goal and two fast-break layups.

Hennessee struck for five points and Pantoja a 3-pointer as Gaeta’s turned an 18-18 tie into a 28-18 Baller lead. Western Tree had one comeback left, scoring the next 10 points behind three Bakker hoops and two from Marisa Taylan. But Gaeta’s scored 11 of the next 13 points to put away the title. Bakker took Nursery scoring honors with 14 points.

Shante Mancera popped in 26 points and Cristine Filice delivered nine as Williams Dental Lab completed the 2008-9 season with a 44-26 win over the Garlic Girls. Toni Greene and Wendy Filice each mustered 10 points for the Garlic Girls.

Valerie Smith Intero won the Men’s Basketball League’s second-half title by outlasting South Valley Disposal 63-52 in a tie-breaker Wednesday at Solorsano Gym.

South Valley Disposal slipped to 5-1 and into the tie-breaker by dropping a 52-49 decision to Team Techron Monday. Mark Taylan’s five 3-pointers paced Techron, the first-half champion. Rick Vasquez scored 14 for South Valley Disposal.

Valerie Smith Intero, the defending league champion, rushed to a 33-23 lead by halftime against South Valley Disposal. Mark Cisneros anchored the Intero offense with 17 points. Kevin Steele contributed 13 points to the Intero cause. Mike Kachel garnered 16 points, Israel Gonzalez 14 for South Valley Disposal.

Team Techron and VSI will begin the best 2-of-3 Championship Series on Monday at Solorsano. The second game will be Wednesday and the third game, if needed, will be Monday, March 9. All games will tip-off at 7 p.m.
