GILROY – Whether Gilroyans need to clean out their closets or shop for a kitchen lamp, the South County Garage Sale will have something for everyone.

The sale will be a citywide event in both Gilroy and Morgan Hill, with as many as 400 homes joining the cause the weekend of Sept. 6 and 7. Anyone in South County holding a garage sale that weekend can put their address on a list that will be printed in The Dispatch and other papers and distributed through Gilroy and Morgan Hill’s 7-Eleven stores.

Gilroy Community Services hopes that putting buyers and sellers in touch with each other will benefit the environment.

“The cities are sponsoring (the garage sale) to promote the idea of re-use, conserving landfill space and avoiding wasting valuable resources,” said Lisa Jensema, environmental programs coordinator for the city. “We’re getting people to throw away less.”

Anyone wanting to hold a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. can apply to be put on the list by downloading an application from the city’s Web site and mailing, faxing or carrying it into City Hall. Paper copies of the application are also available at Gilroy Public Library and City Hall.

Once a request is accepted, those holding a sale will receive a “garage sale kit” from community services that includes balloons and a sign for advertising the sale, an inventory sheet to keep track of sold items and a list of local charities that will accept donations of items that did not sell.

This is the eighth year that the South County Garage Sale will attract residents from all around the county to Gilroy and Morgan Hill.

“The big plus is that the draw of the people coming from out of the area is much greater than it would be on an ordinary weekend,” Jensema said.

The city holds the garage sale during September because the weather is more predictable than it is around Earth Day in April, Jensema said.

About 500 of the sales lists are distributed at the 7-Eleven locations each year, Jensema said. The lists will be at Gilroy’s 7-Elevens, located on First Street, West Tenth Street and Leavesley Road, and on Sept. 5. They will also be published in The Dispatch, Morgan Hill Times, Hollister Freelance and San Jose Mercury News.

The application can be found on the City of Gilroy Web site: www.ci.gilroy.ca.us They can be faxed to:
