GILROY – Car lovers and garlic lovers alike won’t want to miss this year’s Garlic City Fun Run on Saturday, July 10. The public can view hundreds of pre-1972 cars while enjoying live music and Garlic Festival favorites.

“It brings people together for a good time, good food and provides an opportunity for people to see something they wish they had,” said Dave Peoples, coordinator of the event, referring to an estimated 300 cars which will line Monterey Street from Third to Seventh streets extending west when needed.

Peoples expects between 7,000 and 10,000 people to pass through the event, bringing business to local merchants and restaurants. There also will be various food vendors including a mini Gourmet Alley which plans to offer garlic bread, sausage sandwiches, calamari and the new penne con pesto dish. Gourmet Alley will begin serving at 4:30.

If visitors want to get a little exercise after dinner they can dance to Sha-Boom, Elvis and Juz Cuz in the Lewis Street parking lot by the Gourmet Alley booth. There will also be a DJ set up on the opposite side of Monterey Street.

To add to the festivities, 2004 Garlic Festival President John Zekanoski will light the giant garlic bulb, kicking off this year’s garlic celebration.

South Valley Street Rods will also sell raffle tickets, $5 per 10, for prizes including auto supplies, bicycles and even cash. Proceeds go towards scholarships for Gilroy High School students.

During the show individuals and local businesses sponsoring the Fun Run’s Merchant and VIP Awards will wander around to select their favorite cars. About 50 awards will be given to recognize the owners.

The sponsors of the event, South Valley Street Rod and the Downtown Association, eliminated the traditional “cruise” of cars along Monterey Street to avoid overheated engines and traffic jams with city buses.

No alcohol will be sold at the event, which takes place from 3 to 10 p.m.

People can pre-register through Thursday or before 3:30 p.m. the day of the event.
