The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association announced today that it will give out $240,000 to 164 local organizations and nonprofits.
The revenue was generated through the 2009 Gilroy Garlic Festival, and will be distributed according to the hours worked by volunteers representing the organizations, according to the festival association. During its 31-year history, the festival has generated more than $8.5 million for local charities.
“I am so proud to be part of an event that includes thousands of volunteers working together to benefit the community while also throwing an incredible three-day party,” said 2009 festival President Kirsten Carr. “In a time when nonprofits worry about keeping their doors open, we are thrilled to be able to assist them in helping others.”
The South Valley Community Church is set to receive the most aid this year – $13,738. The Gilroy Elks will get $8,575, Orchard Valley Soccer Pumas will receive $7,326. The festival will pay out $71,546 to groups affiliated with the Gilroy Unified School District, $6,993 of which will specifically go out to groups working with Christopher High School – Gilroy’s second comprehensive high school that opened in August.
This year’s festival brought in 108,519 visitors, and was powered thanks to more than 4,000 volunteers, according to the festival association. Next year’s festival is slated for July 23, 24 and 25.
