Gavilan Roundup: Feb. 18

Things were muy Bueno for Gavilan over the weekend.
Andrew Bueno led the Rams with three RBIs in Saturday’s 11-2 win over De Anza at home. He went 2 for 4 and also had a walk.
With a run already scored, Bueno hit a two-RBI single to bring Jake Conlan and Javier Garcia to put the Rams ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first.
Eric Guill-Perez kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the second to score DJ  Santellano. With the bases loaded, Adam Kocina was walked to send Eric Guill-Perez home, keeping the bases full for Bueno. Bueno singled to score Danny Guiterrez and put Gavilan ahead 6-0. 
Kocina was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a two walks in the game. He also had a stolen base.
Matt Oxner (3-1) picked up the win, going five innings and giving up only one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out four.
Santellano picked up an RBI of his own in the bottom of the third when he reached on a fielder’s choice to send Alex Hagiperos home. Santellano would find his way across the plate after Guill-Perez reached on an error. Conlan followed up with a two-RBI single to score Garcia and Guill-Perez.
Guill-Perez was 3 for 5 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Conlan went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run and a walk. 
Gavilan’s final run came in the bottom of the fifth when Santellano was able to cross home plate after a Guiterrez flied out to right field.
Guiterrez went 2 for 4 with two runs, an RBI and a walk, while Santello was 0 for 3 with three runs, two stolen bases, an RBI and a walk. 
Gavilan (5-4) also won 6-0 at De Anza Friday, though stats from that game were not available.
The Rams will play at City College of San Francisco at 1 p.m. today.
SOFTBALL
Rams .500 at Stars & Stripes Tourney
Gavilan took care of business on the opening day of the Stars & Stripes Tournament. The second day, however, wasn’t as pretty.
The Rams finished 2-2 at the tournament in Visalia Friday and Saturday. They opened with a dominate wins over Cosumnes River, 7-1, and College of the Siskiyous 12-1. Gavilan lost 3-2 to Fresno  and 13-5 to Solano in five innings on day two.
Paige Miguel (4-1) took care of business on the mound and at the plate against Consumnes River, going the distance and allowing only run while striking out eight of the 24 batters faced. She also went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Adrianna Ortega also went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a double in that game.
Gavilan scored one in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Ortega’s bat stayed hot against Siskiyous, going 1 for 3 with two RBIs in that game. Samantha Parraz was 0 for 3, but had two RBIs and two walks in the game. Kristen Dennis was also 0-ffer at the plate, but had two RBIs and a walk.
Gavilan scored four runs in the first, second and third innings while Siskiyous was able to score its lone run in the top of the fifth.
Angelica Carrillo got the ‘W’ in the circle, pitching five innings and allowing zero earned runs, walking four and striking out two. 
Gavilan and Fresno were scoreless until the final frame when the Rams were finally able to get on the board. Miguel and Ortega both picked up RBIs to put them ahead 2-0, but Fresno answered with three of their own to clinch the victory.
Miguel faced 30 batters in her 6.1 innings of work, giving up 11 hits and three runs while striking out four.
Stats from the Solano game were not available.
Gavilan will look to rebound at noon Thursday at Monterey Peninsula College.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Gavilan edges Hartnell
Gavilan picked up its third win of the year, a 49-41 decision over Hartnell Friday. 
Tawne Haynish led the offense with 15 points, adding five rebounds, two assists and a block. Kelsey Caudill scored 14 points in addition to nine boards, two assists and two steals.
The Rams took a slim 22-20 lead into halftime, but those two extra points proved vital. Hartnell kept things close, being outscored by only six points after the break.
Gavilan will play its home finale at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Monterey Peninsula College.

Hartnell tops Gavilan
Ramandeep Bassi nailed five 3-pointers in Friday’s game against Hartnell, but it wasn’t enough to lift Gavilan to a win.
Bassi led the Rams with 24 points scored en route to a 79-58 loss to the visitors. Gavilan is now 1-20 overall, 0-10 in conference play and have lost 17 straight.
The Rams will play their final home game of the season at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Monterey Peninsula College.
