GILROY—Gavilan finished 1-3 at the Delta College Classic Saturday after facing some tough competition.
The Rams opened the tournament Friday with a 3-0 win over Reedley. Gavilan won 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 behind strong offensive performances from Samantha Nydam and Madison Hartman. Nydam led the team with 11 kills, while Hartman had 10. Erica Chapa racked up 32 assists, 12 digs and three aces. Valerie Rodgers added 11 digs.
And then things got tougher.Â
Next up for Gavilan was Cabrillo College, which nearly recorded the sweep. The Rams forced a fourth set with a 25-17 win Set 3. But it was Cabrillo which walked away with a 3-1 victory.
Nydam again led the Rams with 16 kills and two aces. Chapa recorded 30 assists, while Rodgers had 17 digs and three aces. Alexia Balistreri had four block assists and two solo blocks for Gavilan. Greer Watson added three solo blocks, too.
The tournament didn’t get any easier for Gavilan on Saturday. It was swept 3-0 by San Joaquin Delta, losing 22-25, 20-25, 11-25.
Chapa led the Rams in almost every category as she notched eight kills, 15 assists, 12 digs and two aces. Rodgers added 15 digs for Gavilan.
Gavilan wrapped up the tournament with a showdown with Santa Rosa, but lost 3-2. Santa Rosa won the first two sets 25-16, 25-16 but the Rams won the next two 25-22, 25-21. Gavilan fell just shy of the ‘W’, dropping the final set 9-15.
Chapa led her team with 12 kills and 18 assists. Rodgers and Hartman each had two aces apiece. Balisteri and Haleigh Hawkins both recorded four block assists against Santa Rosa.
Gavilan (3-3) will be back on the court Tuesday to play in the Sacramento City College Classic.
