Lynn Meyer, chairwoman of the Silicon Valley Charity Ball and resident of Holiday Lake Estates, has been running on high ever since she was appointed to her position to organize and execute one of the biggest charity events of the year in Santa Clara County.
This year’s theme Viva el Corazón speaks of the hearts of the valley and charity from the heart. The Latin theme will be carried through in décor and the music of Sergio Mendes and Brazil 2005.
Oh, what to wear to such a glorious night? Being a consummate planner of details Lynn worked on the “what to wear” dilemma months ago with dress designer Leona Guidaci. Guidaci met with Lynn last week in Lynn’s lakeside home for one of her last fittings before the ball. I was invited to witness, take pictures, gather a story and my favorite part, sip Clos LaChance sparkling wine (not referred to as Champagne so as not to offend any Frenchmen reading this column from online in tiny Paris apartments).
Guidaci arrived with a gorgeous ball gown made of seven yards of Chantilly lace-double galloon, five yards of tulle and five yards of silk organza. I threw in the galloon part, as I learned from Guidaci that lace is either single galloon (fancy edge) or double galloon (fancy edge on both sides). There, something with which to impress your sewing buddies or mention as fact between football quarters.
The fitting went smoothly after Meyer added her own touches – three art deco brooches to gather up the skirt, a white fox fur cape from Bloomingdales and stunning jeweled evening shoes from New York. The ninth annual Silicon Valley Charity Ball can now commence, its chairwoman is decked out and ready to tango. It’s going to be tough to keep that white dress clean until April 30th if you don’t stop standing by the fireplace drinking bubbly, Lynn!
And of drinking … Congratulations to local winemaker Dave Heiber of Sarah’s Vineyard and the winery’s proprietor Tim Slater. Dave opened up his e-mail on March 4 to six e-mail inquiries from the East Coast asking about shipment of the winery’s 2001 merlot. Perplexed, Dave quizzed one of the East Coasters to find out how they found his little vintage.
“You were named Best Value for high-end Merlot in a Wall Street Journal Tasting.”
“Cool,” thought Dave. Dave has an understated appreciation of his own work. Apparently, the authors of the tasting didn’t. Sarah’s Vineyard was named alongside Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley big hitters such as Groth, Joseph Phelps, Duckhorn and Matanzas Creek.
Molly, the winery’s happy-go-lucky mutt seems to have taken it in stride. My visit to the winery didn’t affect Molly’s small town friendliness as she greeted me with a “come on, let’s romp through the vines and catch butterflies.” Stop by the vineyard and give Dave a pat on the back and taste what New Yorkers are craving and can’t get shipped to them (ha ha – add that to the list of why we live in here!).
More Congratulations … to Alexia Johnson of Morgan Hill. Alexia just received her acceptance into the UC Davis Enology certificate course. With a little trepidation and excitement, Alexia plans to use this schooling to further the plans she and her husband have to open Monte Verde Vineyards. The grape juice is flowing like water around South Valley. Bonne Chance, Alexia.
