Handy’s big fourth quarter helps lift Mustangs from behind
Felton – Gilroy got the opportunity Tuesday to prove it could play come-from-behind basketball.

Trailing by eight in the third quarter, the Mustangs rallied for a 61-51 win as they beat the Cougars for the second time in four days. And this one proved as difficult as the first, despite the final score.

It took a big fourth quarter by Kameron Handy and an effective 1-3-1 zone defense to rally Gilroy (4-1), which outpointed San Lorenzo Valley 21-7 in the last eight minutes.

“We played hard defense and looked like we were playing better tonight, especially in the second half when we started feeding off each other,” GHS coach Bud Ogden said.

Javin Charlot led the Mustangs with 21 points and handed out four assists in the second half in his second big performance against the Cougars — he had 28 points Saturday.

Handy had 18 points, scoring 12 in the fourth quarter when he was 8-of-8 at the foul line. Jason Conrad had his best game of the season, getting his first double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds. The 6-10 junior also blocked seven shots.

The Cougars got a game-high 23 points from Scott Krueger. The 6-3 senior guard has a knack for big scoring games against the Mustangs. Krueger with 29 points kept San Lorenzo Valley in its first game with Gilroy during the semifinals of the Aptos Seascape Resort Invitational. And last December when the Cougars beat Gilroy 59-42, Krueger had 23 points.
