The Gilroy field hockey team is putting its games away early. The younger players are getting some valuable experience. The coaches are getting the chance to experiment with several position changes.

And the team just keeps rolling along.

Against Tri-County Athletic League rival Robert Louis Stevenson High Thursday, the Mustangs coasted to a 3-0 victory.

“We really just outplayed RLS … offensively, in the midfield and defensively,” said co-head coach Adam Gemar, whose team outshot the Pirates, 18-2.

In the first half, Gilroy got on the board quick with two goals from sophomore forward Kelly Perkins, who scored three in Tuesday’s win over Monterey.

“She is really finishing strong and putting it in the back of the net when it needs to happen,” Gemar said.

As a team, the Mustangs are also starting strong, a point of emphasis this season.

“We’re scoring goals now in both halves,” said senior midfielder Meg Perkins, Kelly’s older sister. “Last year we were only scoring second-half goals.

“We had numerous games where we had to come from behind to win.”

Another key to the team’s success has been the ability to experiment, co-head coach Erin Gemar.

“Our game against RLS helped us take a strong step toward defining some younger players’ roles for them,” she said. “We’ve had the opportunity during these past couple of games to experiment with positioning.”

“Against Stevenson, we saw a few more key players fall into place.”

One of those is Elena Ramirez, who scored the team’s only second-half goal against RLS. The senior forward recently moved to the right forward position.

“I think that’s the big difference in our play,” Adam Gemar said. “Right now, she is making the big plays on the right side.”

The Mustangs, who haven’t allowed a goal in five straight games, are now off until Wednesday’s trip to Santa Catalina High.
