Boys lose to Watsonville in Aptos Classic
Gilroy

Gilroy’s split-squad teams split their games Friday in the Mustang Classic at Gilroy High and will face off today for the consolation title.

The Mustangs, who agreed to split up their teams after a late tournament dropout, will play today at 2 p.m.

The Gilroy B team lost to Notre Dame 46-38, while the Gilroy A team defeated Gunderson 32-23.

Gilroy B got off to a good first half, but wasn’t able to keep up the momentum. With just eight players available, Gilroy couldn’t keep up with Notre Dame’s constant full-court press.

“We just ran out of gas,” said Gilroy coach James Wilkins. “We didn’t execute from the outside like we are capable of doing.”

Gilroy’s Angela Silveira was the game’s top scorer with 12 points, Stephanie Solorio and Lindsey Foster each had four, Chelsea Hill and Vanessa Wilkins had three each, and Allison Green added two.

The same teams will meet in league play, and Wilkins said there may be a different result next time.

“They have a good team,” Wilkins said. “They are fast and physical. They play good uptempo ball. We’re the same type of team, but we’re very good inside and have good outside shooting as well. It will be very interesting next time around. We match up well.”

For the Gilroy A team, Laura Steele led the way with eight points. Breanna Mah had five points, Jennifer Rose, Kristy Pineda and Carmen Estrada had four points each, Sovi Nou had three points and Elaina Osaki had two.

“We scrimmage against each other almost every practice,” Wilkins said about their matchup today. “A very important part of this tournament is for the girls to get playing time. Win or lose, they gain valuable knowledge. Our girls don’t like to lose.”

Boys

The Gilroy High boys basketball team lost 72-57 to Watsonville in the Aptos Seascape Classic Friday.

Gilroy (2-1) got off to a quick start and at one time had a 12-point advantage. But Watsonville (5-1) hit 11 3-pointers in the game, and Gilroy got into foul trouble.

Jason Conrad led the Mustangs with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Jacob Dexter had 12 points, including four 3-pointers. Derek Jensen also had 12 points.

“They started double and triple teaming us,” said Gilroy assistant coach Jeremy Dirks. “We were in foul trouble the whole night, which was tough. They are an upstart team. Hopefully we can bounce back. We’ll be playing a good team. We’re going to come back and correct our mistakes and play hard.”
