SALINAS – The Gilroy High girls varsity tennis team’s season came to an abrupt end on the first day of the Tri County Athletic League
Tournament in Salinas on Monday. The top two singles players and top two doubles players were unable to advance to today’s semifinal and final rounds.
The Mustangs No. 1 doubles pairing of seniors Meha Munshi and Alissa Castro coasted through the first round of play, defeating an Alisal duo of Jennifer Camacho and Myra Juarez, 6-3, 6-0. However, the No. 1 pair could not continue the momentum against the top-doubles tandem of Vanessa Casalegno and Chelsea Yoakum of San Benito, who ended the season with a 41-match regular-season winning streak, dating back to their sophomore year.
Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez, Gilroy’s No. 2 doubles team, were couldn’t make it out of the first round, losing in two sets to the Balers No. 2, Rachel Smith and Erin Glasspool, 6-3, 6-3.
No. 1 singles player Jennifer Kwong battled with the tournament’s top seed, Taryn Andrews of Salinas, but eventually dropped the match, 6-1, 6-3.
“Jennifer put up a very good fight out there,” head coach Jami Reynolds said. “All the coaches were impressed with her hitting.”
Satthea Khay drew a tough opponent for her first-round match in San Benito’s Hayley Barker, coming up short, 6-0, 6-0. Khay, the Mustangs constant No. 4 singles player throughout the year, moved up to the No. 2 position for the TCALs.
“It was not how I would have liked to finish after all the hard work they put into practice all season,” Reynolds said. “I do think that the juniors gained some experience that will help them next year.”
