Mustangs dominate Robert Louis Stevenson in 8-0 win at
Garcia-Elder Complex
Gilroy – Her teammates watched in amazement Monday as Cathy Silva dribbled half the length of the field and scored unassisted.
This is not typical, even for high-scoring Gilroy. After all, Silva is a defender whose main strength is keeping the opposition from scoring. Her teammates appreciate her, which is why they were whooping it up on the sideline when Silva scored.
“I didn’t know you could dribble like that,” Erin Magill said, a look of mock amazement on her face.
It was the highlight of another one-sided Mission Trail Athletic League contest, as Gilroy eased past Robert Louis Stevenson 8-0 to keep its MTAL field hockey record unblemished.
Actually, Magill was a human highlight film for the Mustangs (7-2-1 overall, 6-0 in MTAL) with three goals and two assists. But once again, GHS was a little slow getting the offense untracked.
While the Mustangs played almost the entire first half within 20 yards of the Pirates’ (2-4) goal, they didn’t score until Amanda Spellman scored on a feed from Elise Ogle with 18:54 left in the first half. And then the floodgates opened.
“It seems like she always scores our first goal,” Magill said. “It seems that once that happens, we can follow it up.”
It was Magill who followed it 25 seconds later, assisted by Russhelle Preeshl and Laura Spellman. And then it was Magill putting a pass right on Kelly Perkins’ stick to set up the goal that made it 3-0 at halftime.
Perkins also scored the first goal of the second half, assisted by Magill and Laura Spellman. Magill scored the next two goals, first assisted by Megan McAvoy and then by Lindsey Valadez. Next it was Linsey Kwong scoring her second goal of the season and finally it was Silva’s turn in the spotlight with 7:25 remaining.
“Our best passing game,” coach Adam Gemar said. “Erin was just possessed. And Little Spell (Laura Spellman) is the smartest player as a sophomore I’ve ever coached. Our non-starters played a great game as well.”
The pregame talk centered on remaining focused even during games the team is expected to dominate.
“We wanted to come out intense,” Magill said. “We talked about it before the game. Even when we were missing shots early), we just wanted to keep on going, to try to get one in to get us started.”
Once the scoring started, it was like an avalanche.
Junior varsity: Gilroy and RLS played to a 1-1 tie. Marissa McBride scored for the Mustangs.
Davis Tournament: With most of its seniors unavailable, GHS went 0-2-2 in the tournament Saturday. The Mustangs tied Yuba City and Pleasant Valley 0-0, sandwiched around 4-0 defeats to Chico and St. Francis.
