Nearly a year ago to the day, Carmel High beat the Gilroy boys’ basketball team at the buzzer on an improbable bank shot from 22 feet out.

In a first-round game at the Aptos Invitational Wednesday, GHS exacted its revenge – and didn’t need any miracles to pull it off.

The Mustangs (2-0) led from start to finish in a 47-35 victory over the Padres.

Pressing nearly the entire game, Gilroy did allow Carmel to get to the free-throw line 29 times, but also held the Padres to just eight field-goals. As for Paul Holbrook, the guard who banked in last year’s game-winner, he was held scoreless on this night.

“We were fairly pleased,” GHS head coach Bud Ogden said. “We turned it over some, but that’s going to happen when you play uptempo.”

Seniors Vince Mitre (10 pts.) and Adam Supnet (7 pts.) not only led the Mustangs’ balanced attack, but were also involved in what was easily the highlight of the game.

The point guard Supnet threaded the needle and tossed a perfect diagonal bounce pass to Mitre from halfcourt.

“It was one of the best assists I’ve ever seen … and I’ve seen a lot of assists,” said Ogden, who spent some time in the NBA as a player. “I don’t know how he got it there. It was incredible.”

Already halfway to last year’s win total, Gilroy now moves onto the semifinals, where its faces host team Aptos Friday at 8.

Soccer hits roadblock in SJ

Two days. Two games. One score.

Despite outshooting its opponent, the GHS girls’ soccer team lost 5-1 Wednesday at San Jose’s Lincoln High. It was the same score by which it lost to Los Gatos the day before.

“It was just one of those days … wasn’t good, wasn’t bad,” Gilroy head coach Jose Hernandez said. “It was very similar to the Los Gatos game. We didn’t put away chances that we should’ve.”

“It’s a good, humbling, learning experience. It shows us some of the areas we need to continue to work on.”

The Mustangs, who got their on their goal from sophomore forward Stephanie Glenn, were shorthanded with Alysha Davis, Brittany Barnes and Kristie Figueroa out with minor injuries.

Nevertheless, Hernandez said Gilroy “probably should’ve won” and needs to focus on a few key areas in the coming weeks, starting with today’s practice and Friday’s 3:30pm game at North County.

“Communication is vital,” he said. “We have to get it improved. Conditioning, communication and vision on the field are all important.”
