Gilroy – Power was shut down at the high school for almost four hours Tuesday as PG&E crews worked to find the problem as students and staff worked in the dark.
“It went down partially at 1:40pm and a little after 2pm we shut down completely,” said Assistant Principal Greg Camacho Light. “Preliminary (reports were) that it had to do with the outage we had a couple of days prior. It looks like we were the only ones affected.”
Phone lines and air conditioners were shut off because of the drain they were causing on the rest of the power system. By 4:15pm areas of the school were phased back on.
Teachers using overhead projectors shifted gears to complete their lessons. Others opened classroom doors for additional light.
“Had it been pouring rain … it probably would have been bad,” Camacho Light said. “But we got through it.”
PG&E officials did not record a power outage in Gilroy Tuesday and is attributing Gilroy High School’s problem as an isolated incident. Power was knocked out Monday afternoon in the area of Chestnut Street and Luchessa Avenue when a truck sheared a power pole. Power was restored within the hour.
