Gilroy – In the past, the Gilroy field hockey team has done well at the Willow Glen Jamboree, but not against the type of competition the Mustangs faced Friday and Saturday at the competitive tournament.
The team went 2-1-2 during the two-day event, the highlight of which, coach Erin Gemar said, was a 1-0 loss to last year’s Central Coast Section co-champ Archbishop Mitty. Gilroy finished in the top third of the Jamboree, which had over 20 participating teams.
“This is the best we’ve ever done at this tournament,” Gemar said. “We’ve had the same record once before, but not against teams like this.”
The ‘Stangs opened Jamboree play with Mitty, the team that ended up winning the tournament and which coach Adam Gemar said appears to be the best in CCS. In goal for GHS was Stephanie Glenn, who held the Monarchs to a first-half goal off a short corner.
Despite being shutout, Gilroy took more control as the game went on.
“We played a lot of defense in the first half,” Erin Gemar said. “In the second half, it was more up and back.”
Erin Gemar thought playing against Mitty’s tough defense actually helped the Mustangs get a better understanding of what they have been practicing with their own offense.
“I think we learned a lot from their defensive lineup. They did a lot of double and triple teaming,” Erin Gemar said. “So they can see that as a whole team. It was a good visual.”
After Mitty, GHS bounced back with a 3-0 win over Robert Louis Stevenson later on Friday evening. Junior Dana Schoeneman scored pair of goals and sophomore Lindsey Valadez, who usually plays defense, scored one.
In their first game on Saturday, the ‘Stangs defeated Davis 2-0 with goals from freshman Laura Spellman (assisted by Schoeneman and Amanda Spellman) and Emily Haygood (assisted by Amanda Spellman).
Gilroy finished off the day and the tournament with ties games to Saratoga (1-1) and Westmont (0-0). Against Saratoga, senior Karlie Sandoval tied the game on a penalty stroke.
Next up for Gilroy is its MTAL league opener against Carmel Wednesday at home at 5:15pm.
