The Gilroy wrestling team has won 14 straight CCS titles and now the Mustangs are going for No. 15.
The section championships kickoff Friday at Independence High School where the Mustangs will be heavily favored to repeat as team champions yet again.
CCS announced the seedings for the weight class brackets and the Mustangs are all over the listings. With 10 wrestlers given Top 3 seeds, Gilroy will have the deepest squad heading to the two-day tournament.
No other school has more than three wrestlers seeded in the Top 3.
Not just that, Gilroy has seven wrestlers seeded No. 1 in their brackets.
One of the biggest things to watch—beyond whether Gilroy will repeat for the 15th time as CCS team champs—is whether the Mustangs will break their own record for most team points.
Last year, Gilroy came up just short of its 2015 record. The 2015 record broke Gilroy’s record from the year before.
Leading the pack is Nick Aguilar at 113 pounds—who is ranked third in the state—who is looking to improve upon his second place finish at state from a year ago.
He is joined by Alex Felix (132), John Fox (138), Nate Villareal (145), Joe Barnes (160), Nic Villareal (170) and Antonio Andrade (195) as top seeds.
Rounding out the seeds is Chase Saldate at No. 3 in 120 pounds, Dan Vizcarra No. 2 in 126 and Dallas Gutierrez at No. 2 in 152.
Not to be out done, Christopher is tied for the second most wrestlers seeded in the Top 3.
Adam Mena leads the charge at 170 pounds seeded No. 2 just behind Nic Villareal.
Anthony Gomez at 220 pounds earned a No. 2 seed with Anthony Figueroa at 152 pounds seeded No. 3.
