Stephen Galtman gave the Mustangs what they needed Thursday, coming off the bench to score all six of his points as GHS erased a first-quarter deficit and defeated Pioneer 51-47 in the opening round of the Aptos Seascape Classic.
Gilroy (1-1) moved into the semifinals against San Lorenzo Valley, which beat Watsonville in the opener. Game time is 6:30pm today.
“Stephen Galtman gave us a boost off the bench and Michael Martinez did as well,” said GHS coach Bud Ogden.
It was Destry Jones who kept the Mustangs in the game in the first quarter. Jones, who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, scored nine points in the opening frame for Gilroy, which trailed 14-12 after one quarter.
GHS outscored Pioneer (1-1) 17-9 in the second quarter. T.J. Watson paced Pioneer with 13 points.
Martinez scored 12 points and Kameron Handy added 10 for Gilroy, which faced fullcourt pressure defense for the second time in three nights.
GHS handled it better this time than on Tuesday when the Mustangs committed 36 turnovers in a 63-47 loss to Valley Christian.
“The bench really helped us,” Ogden said. “They pressed us the whole game but we didn’t turn the ball over nearly as many times.”
