GILROY – Born and raised in Gilroy, Ryan Dequin is very familiar with the baseball traditions.

A graduate of Gilroy High in 2001 and four-year member of the baseball team, Dequin spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Gavilan College.

Now, the 27-year-old is starting a new wave of traditions as the manager of the Christopher High baseball squad.

Dequin has already implemented a college-type coaching system, teaching the young players a thing or two about discipline on and off the field.

“I told them from day one that I’m going to treat them like a college team,” Dequin said. “I’m going to put the responsibility on them and give them the opportunity to make or break themselves. I teach this game, and I tried to play this game with the utmost respect. I try to instill that with them.”

Dequin sent the message loud and clear, having his guys do a little extra conditioning at practice Wednesday for causing trouble earlier in the day.

With the long and sometimes arduous process of starting a program from scratch, Dequin found that developing a full 27-game schedule was the most difficult part. Once that was ironed out, it was easy sailing. The Cougars will field a JV and freshman team.

The Cougars will hold a Casino Night at Stubby’s Sports Bar and Grill on Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight to raise funds for field improvements and uniforms for next year’s varsity team.

CHS next plays today at Santa Teresa at 3:30 p.m., then hosts the Saints on Saturday. First pitch is slated for noon.
