Larry Bubb comes to Gilroy.

Gilroy’s First Baptist Church on 8457 Wren Avenue invites local residents to some special events happening next month.

The church’s annual Fall Renewal Services take place on Oct. 7-9. The church’s pastor, the Rev. Mark Milwee, says this is a time to give the congregation a “shot in the arm” following the summer vacations and to “reach out to the community with the message of the love of Christ.”

These services, free to the public, will be held on Friday and Saturday nights at 7pm, Sunday morning at 10:45am. The guest speaker will be Larry Bubb, a well-known evangelist who uses humor, drama and music to reach out to both children and adults.

Pastor Milwee calls him a “communicator of the 21st century.”

Bubb has performed in 30 states and several countries, as well as appeared on television and had some of his songs broadcast on radio.

Born in Kentucky in 1956, Bubb grew up in northern Kentucky, graduating from Campbellsville University where he played guitar and lettered in basketball and tennis. He received an MA Divinity degree from Southern Seminary in 1980, was ordained in 1981, and moved to California to become Youth Pastor at First Baptist Church in Poway.

In 1985 Bubb formed Larry Bubb Ministries; since then he has traveled full-time ministering in a wide variety of locations, including churches, Christian comedy clubs, colleges, and the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park.

Pastor Milwee invites anyone who would like to enjoy some “good, wholesome family entertainment” to attend these events.

On Oct. 15-16, the First Baptist Church will host the Central Coast Baptist Association Missions Conference.

Although sponsored by the 100 Southern Baptist churches in this area, it is open to anyone who would like to know more about the exciting field of missionary work.

Saturday from 6:30-8:30pm will be Youth Missions Night, with live music, fellowship and fun. School-age children will have an opportunity to meet missionaries serving in foreign lands and learn about foods and customs in the countries in which the missionaries serve.

Sunday from 2:45 4pm will be a free Gospel Music Festival. Groups from near (Morgan Hill) and far (Latvia) will be performing an eclectic variety of music, all of which center on Jesus Christ.

Following the Gospel Music Festival will be a missions conference featuring mission work from “around the corner and around the world,” particularly missionaries who work with immigrants in Belgium and children in South Africa. There will also be praise and worship plus an opportunity to learn about new ministries.

For more information about any of these events, call the church at 847-6000 or check out its Web Site at www.fbcgilroy.org.

Cable television subscribers in Morgan Hill and Gilroy can watch the morning worship services of First Baptist Church every Saturday evening at 7pm (Gilroy, channel 19; Morgan Hill, channel 20). This ministry to shut-ins has provided a valuable service to South County residents for some time.
