Two Gilroy churches have announced special events of public interest next weekend. South Valley residents are invited to attend three quite different experiences.
– The First Church of Christ, Scientist, 283 W. Fifth St., will hold a public lecture on a topic of great national interest, universal health care. With the cost of medical care and insurance increasing rapidly, perhaps it is time to learn of “a spiritual solution for health that has the assurance of God’s great love behind it.”
Heloisa Gelber Rivas is an international speaker who has toured the world sharing ideas about prayer and healing. Her warmth and enthusiasm shine through her presentations as she helps audiences explore how prayer can improve life conditions.
“The Spiritual Reality of Health” will be presented free of charge twice on Saturday afternoon, March 1. The 1 p.m. session will be in English; it will be repeated in Spanish at 3 p.m. Call (408) 842-4234 for more information.
– Gilroy’s First Baptist Church will host Moishe Rosen, the founder of the evangelistic group Jews for Jesus which has 127 chapters in 41 states and five foreign countries. He will speak at the church, 8455 Wren Ave., at 10:45 a.m. on March 2; his topic will be “A Passover Connection,” based on the Gospel of Luke, chapter 22, verses 1 through 13.
Rosen is known for his creative ways of communicating the Gospel: Pamphlets called “broadsides” use eye-catching illustrations and humorous themes to make a statement about Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. In one of his famous quips, Rosen wrote, “I know that most atheists aren’t looking for God. An atheist who is looking for God is like a hooky-player looking for a truant officer.”
Rosen is the author of several books emphasizing the Jewish roots of Christianity: “The Messiah was born in Israel, not Greece or Rome. His mother’s name was Miryam, not Mary. And he was known as Y’shua–that’s the Jewish way to say Jesus.”
There is no admission charge to hear this dynamic speaker.
– First Baptist will also be the venue for the only South Valley performance of “Illusion and Beyond” starring Toby Travis, acclaimed illusionist and inspirational speaker, Sunday evening, March 2.
Travis is a multi-talented performer: magician, actor, humorist and motivational speaker. He has been appearing live in theaters in the U.S., Europe and South America, as well as on several television shows. His show is described as “a magical blend of humor, mind-bobbling illusion and a refreshing, enlightening look at the supernatural and pseudo-supernatural.” Travis will entertain the audience while helping them “discern between genuine and fraudulent supernatural claims.”
Tickets are $10 each (with one free ticket for each two paid admissions) and must be ordered in advance by calling (408) 847-2629.
