GILROY – Internal expectations continue to be a clip above the competition’s for Gilroy High field hockey.

Despite crushing Carmel 7-0 while on the road Tuesday, the Mustangs didn’t consider the win a class performance. At least coach Adam Gemar didn’t.

“It was 7-nothing but we struggled,” he said. “Our play was all right. We just couldn’t do anything fancy with it.”

Grass longer and slower than the turf Gilroy has grown accustomed to at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex hampered the visitors from putting on the passing clinic that often leaves opponents out of position. The Mustangs led 2-0 at halftime, mainly because they were unable to stretch the field at the pace they prefer.

“You couldn’t pass or dribble,” Gemar said. “[The ball] would get stuck and you would overrun it.”

A change in alignment and approach to the ball at halftime made all the difference, as Gilroy tacked on five more scores in the final 30 minutes.

Alyssa Kroeger and Dani Hemeon scored two goals each. Jennifer Rose, Alex Rose, and Melissa McBride had apiece, and Elise Ogle totaled four assists.

The Mustangs undefeated mark of 18-0-1 will be tested today as they travel to Archbishop Mitty for a 3:30 p.m. contest. It will be the biggest threat to Gilroy’s goal of going unbeaten in the regular season, along with a game against St. Francis next Thursday, Oct. 30.

The Mustangs have already beaten both teams this season.
