Gilroy’s varsity girls soccer team retained a flawless record in Tri-County Athletic League play Wednesday night, beating North Salinas 2-0.

After controlling possession for 60-plus minutes, Sara Hugo gave the Mustangs the first goal of the game with 18 minutes to play. Just 10 minutes later Erin Slattery gave Gilroy a two-goal cushion by finding the back of the net.

While the score was close, Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said the game was in the home team’s favor from start to finish.

“We were able to dominate control of the ball, the tempo,” Hernandez said. “They have a very good keeper and we weren’t able to finish.”

North Salinas’ keeper Chelsea Hill had “three beautiful saves,” according to Hernandez, keeping the Mustangs from running away with the match.

“She had one on Sara,” Hernandez said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God. How did you do that?’ ”

While Gilroy’s coach would have liked his team to finish better, Hernandez said he is happy with the way his players are steadily improving.

The Mustangs are now 4-0 in the TCAL, 5-4-2 overall. North Salinas dropped to 4-5-3 overall, 1-1-3 in league.

Junior Varsity Note:

The Mustangs were able to dominate every facet of their game with North Salinas Wednesday, winning 9-0.
