I finally did something I’ve been meaning to do since we moved to Gilroy nearly six years ago.
I got a Gilroy Library card.
I’m a little ashamed to admit that I finally made the time to visit the library and apply for a card.
I’m surprised it has taken me this long. Growing up, I practically lived in my hometown library, especially in the summertime when a good book in a cozy chair would cure any summertime blahs.
I can remember my mom taking me and my sister at least once a week to choose as many books as our arms could carry.
I had such a hard time deciding which books to select, and when I finally did, I couldn’t wait to return home to settle in for a long read.
Earlier this week, the rainy weather and my book-loving 1-year-old, Emma, spurred me to drop in to the Gilroy Library.
I’m so glad we did.
The library clerks were friendly and courteous and very helpful guiding us through the entire process. In no time at all, Emma and I had a library card and two borrowed board books to boot.
Best of all, I learned about all the various events and services the library has to offer.
It loans out not only books, but DVDs, books on tape, videos, magazines, CDs, and CD-ROMs – more than 1,700,000 items in all. With your library card, you can borrow and return books and other items from any of the nine libraries in the Santa Clara County library system.
And good news for parents: the library is very kid-friendly. The children’s area is filled with books for various ages. Emma immediately spotted the board books on the lowest shelf and dug through them searching for her favorites. For older children, the library has beginning to read books and paperbacks.
I can hardly wait until next year when Emma will be old enough for the weekly story-times, which are set aside for ages 2 and up.
For teens, it offers popular paperbacks, the classics, college catalogs, study guides, career information and free Internet access.
In addition, the library hosts summer reading programs for children and teens, special guests and events, class and club visits, and tours and presentations for people who work with youths.
For aspiring writers, the library has started up the Gilroy Writing Project, designed to give local writers the opportunity to share their work, tips and ideas. The group chooses monthly topics and guest authors on a rotating basis.
Whew! I never knew all of that was happening in our library, which I’m afraid was always somewhat of a mystery to me until this week.
If it’s been awhile since you’ve visited the library or have never been, I encourage you to stop by and check out a favorite book or discover a new one.
I know a visit to our library will be one of my and Emma’s special stops every couple of weeks.
