The Mustangs gave a preview of what they can do when they are clicking on all cylinders, running Alisal out of its gym Tuesday in a surprisingly easy 74-46 Tri-County Athletic League win.
“The boys were reading about how Alisal was ranked higher than us and they didn’t like it,” said assistant coach Jeremy Dirks, who ran the team in the absence of TCAL suspended Bud Ogden. “They wanted to prove that losing to Hollister and some of the other teams wasn’t them. They said they were going to win one for coach. Because coach fought for them (in the last game against Salinas), they wanted to fight for him.”
If that’s the case, the biggest shots came from Javin Charlot. The senior point guard dominated the contest with 27 points, five assists and four steals.
But he had plenty of help in other areas. Post players Jason Conrad and Spencer Ford ruled the paint. Conrad scored eight points but had a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Ford counted a trey among his nine points. His biggest contributions were 15 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Gilroy (14-6 overall, 4-2 TCAL) got off to a fast start. With Charlot scoring 10 points, the Mustangs raced in front 21-10. Unlike other games in which GHS backed off and allowed an opponent back in the game, the Mustangs continued to press ahead, leading 43-26 at halftime, 56-32 after three periods and by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter.
David Alejo led the Trojans (17-6, 3-3) with 14 points. Christian Camacho had 10 points. Elias Rivera had six, more than 10 points below his team-leading average.
“We put them down and held them down, for once,” Dirks said. “They’re a team that can hit the 3-point shot and make a run, but our guys wouldn’t let them.
“Considering the opposition, this was our most dominant overall performance.”
The Mustangs don’t get a chance to rest on their laurels as Thursday they are at Palma for the start of the second half of TCAL games.
