Long time Hollister resident Al Demos passed away at Mabie Skilled Nursing on Friday May 29th, 2009 at the age of 82 years. Al was a native of Davenport,CA, had graduated from Santa Cruz High School where he played football for the semi-pro Sea Hawks in Santa Cruz. Upon graduation he joined the Navy, served two years in the South Pacific during WWII, was honorably discharged and went to work for the Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring as a Division Manager for the area of Santa Cruz to San Luis Obispo. Al was an avid outdoors person who loved the ocean as a young man claming, hunting for abalone, and fishing on Monterey Bay. He also enjoyed San Luis Reservoir, hunting deer locally and out of state, ducks in Los Banos, and playing golf at Bolado and Ridgemark Golf Courses. He was a member and Past Commander of Hollister Post 9242, V.F.W.; a member of B.P.O.E. No. 1436 of Hollister, the Disabled American Vets, the Hollister Boosters Club, and the Telephone Pioneers Club. He enjoyed time at the V.F.W. DugOut with his fellow Veterans. He was predeceased by his parents Denis and Anita Demos; his first wife Marian Johnson Demos who died Sept.1961 and three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his spouse of 47 years Mary Vigna Demos, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Angie and Dave Baker, Erma Vigna (late Tony), Bob and Sheron Johnson all of Hollister; Joe and Jean Vigna of Anaheim, John and Helen Johnson of W. Virginia, and the late Leroy and Dorothy Garner, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, June 1st, 2009 from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. (No Rosary) at the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister. Family and friends will leave the mortuary today (Tues.) at 9:30 A.M. for a 10:00 A.M. Mass at Sacred Heart Church 5th & College Sts., Hollister. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Hollister Post 9242, V.F.W. Andy Puglisi, 59, of Maytown, PA, formerly of Gilroy, CA, died May 22, 2009. He was the loving husband of Deborah Bartol Puglisi. He was born in Rome, Italy, a son of the late Cesare and Maria Cardinale Puglisi. Andy was employed in sales at Eric Electronics where he was both respected and valued. Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Christina L. and Maria V. and Cesare O. Puglisi, all of Maytown; two sisters, Gabriella Amorine of Cummings, GA, and Simonetta Viola of Rome, Italy. As a husband, Andy was lovingly devoted to his wife for 27 years. As a father, he was actively involved in every aspect of his children's lives; encouraging them to pursue their goals and dreams with a passion and energy centered on Jesus Christ. Anyone who knew Andy knew of his passion for history and his child-like love of model trains and planes. Like any true Italian, he enjoyed good food and good company. His sense of humor always made him the life of any party. But if he could, he would tell you that his favorite love, joy, humor and his passion for leading a Christ-filled life. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, but we will rejoice in the fact that he has been made whole again and is in Heaven having the time of his life. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Life Celebration Memorial Service on Sunday, July 12 at 2:30 P.M. at the Acorn Farms Receptions and Conference Center 3141 Mount Joy Road Mount Joy, PA. Interment will be in Italy at a later date. His family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M. until 2:30 P.M. and immediately following the service. Was born in San Jose, CA to Ken and Irene Howell on August 14, 1988. He moved on to another ball field on May 25, 2009 in Chico, CA. In 1992 the family moved to Morgan Hill, CA where Kenny lived until graduating from Bellarmine College Preparatory in 2006.
Manuel "Mela" Montalvo passed away peacefully May 22, 2009 in the presence of loved ones. Survived by her children Sophia (Pedro) Ramirez, Olga Hernandez of Gilroy and Frank Montalvo Jr. of Del Rio, TX, also survived by her sisters Maria "Cuca" Heredia of Chicago, IL and Jennie Hernandez of Gilroy. Survived by 20 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 17 great- great -grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband Frank Montalvo Sr. and children Belia Garcia, Maria Cervantez and Rose Tomasetti, also preceded in death by her parents Margarita and Juan Manuel Hernandez, sister Panchita Ramirez and brothers Theodoro Hernandez Sr. and Samuel Hernandez.
Anne Sugishita, 86, of Morgan Hill, CA entered into eternal rest May 18, 2009. She was born April 20, 1923, in San Jose, CA, the daughter of the late Goro and Mime Tabata. She was one of six children and wife of Thomas Sugishita for 53 years until his passing in 1995. Anne graduated from Hollister High School in 1941 and in 1942 was interned to camp during World War II in Poston, AZ and Heart Mountain, WY, during which time she married Thomas and had their first child. After they were married, Anne and Tom returned to the family ranch in Coyote, CA whereupon they raised their three children and grew Santa Clara County Fair and California State Fair award-winning fruits and vegetables for their Garden Farm Fruit Stand until retiring to Morgan Hill in 1983.
