Ernie was born and raised on a dairy farm in Franklin, California. He was one of four children; Charlotte, Ernie, Francis, and Irwin, born to Elizabeth and Matthew Smith. His father passed away when Ernie was a teenager, leaving Ernie and his brother, Irwin, to maintain the farm. He graduated with honors from Elk Grove High School, where he was a member of the band, and football and basketball teams.
Marjorie E. Chesnut passed away in Hollister. She was born in Beaver City, Nebraska and came to Hollister from Richmond, CA in 1944. She was married to her husband, Erwin "Chet" Chesnut in 1940 in Carson City, NV. He preceded her in death in 1989. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star, Fidelity Rebekah Lodge and was active in the local senior citizens program where she taught crafts. She enjoyed oil painting in her free time.
Winifred L. Saucier, 88, passed away at her home in Corona, CA, where she had lived for the last four years. Winifred worked as Secretary to the Base Commander and Historian at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield before transferring to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she retired in 1976. Winifred was a life member of Mensa and actively involved in big sisters in Fairfield, CA and Honolulu, HI.
ADELA S. CHAPA passed away suddenly at home in Gilroy Thursday, May 3, 2007. Mother of Joe G. Chapa (Yolanda) of Modesto, CA, Robert Chapa (Leticia) of Gilroy, Rene Chapa (Gloria) & Estella Gonzalez (Baldo), both of Gilroy. Grandmother of Mario, Danny, Laura, Anthony, Robert, Mark, Stevie, Cindy, Maryann, Sally, Rosanne, Janae and the late Gabriel, . great-grandmother of 21, sister of Esmeralda Gonzalez of Texas and the late Nestor Salazar. Also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ernesto S. Gallegos died in Hollister. He was born in Mexico and lived in Hollister for 46 years, coming here from Laton, CA and worked for Almaden Vineyards. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the United Farm Workers Union. He enjoyed gardening in his free time.
Virginia O. Garcia passed away in Modesto. She was born in San Jose, AZ and lived in Waterford for the last 7 years. She married her husband, Manuel, in 1963 in Reno, NV and her favorite things in life were family and spending time with her children and their families, shopping and going to Indian casinos. She truly enjoyed life.
Natividad Grimaldo Vargas passed away Friday afternoon in Hollister at the age of 84. Born in Falls City, Texas, she came to Hollister in 1941. Along with being a homemaker and housewife, she worked for several years at Tri-Valley Foods. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Cannery workers Teamster Union, Local 890.
