San Jose – Gilroy High girls basketball coach James Wilkins finally saw his team start to click offensively.

And with the start of Tri-County Athletic League play around the corner beginning Thursday, it couldn’t have come at a better time. It also allowed the Mustangs to salvage a win in the Archbishop Mitty New Year’s Classic as they beat Sequoia 39-22 on Friday.

“The biggest challenge was to find our rhythm as a team, and we just didn’t have that cohesiveness in the first two games (of the tournament),” Wilkins said. “We were starting out in the first quarter in the same way. And then we started to click. To click at this point as we’re getting ready for TCAL is huge.”

Gilroy was led by superb efforts on the boards. Dana Schoeneman had 23 rebounds to go along with her 12 points. Angela Silveria grabbed 10 rebounds to complement her 13 points, and Russhelle Prreeshl grabbed 14 boards.

“We did a marvelous job on the boards,” Wilkins said. “It was a big difference from the last two games we played in the tournament.”

Vanessa Wilkins also had a solid outing with seven points and eight assists.
