Gilroy’s varsity girls basketball team fell just short in a first round game at the Mustang Classic Thursday night, losing 47-39 to North Monterey County High School.

The defeat wasn’t something to get too down about, though, considering only half of GHS’ roster was suited up.

Due to a team withdrawing from the tournament on Wednesday, Gilroy split its squad in half for the Classic, with another six to seven girls playing Watsonville High School later in the evening. The final score of that game was not available at press time.

“”Having to put together a team like we did is tough,” GHS Coach James Wilkins said. “The good thing is all the girls got a chance to play. It allows us to say, this is where we are, and this is where we want to be.

“Even if [opponents] come out with 20 players, we’re going to fight.”

The team from Gilroy that faced NMCHS will play today at home at 3:30 p.m., with other the other team’s tip-off time to be determined from the outcome of Thursday night’s game.

Boys Basketball

The varsity boys basketball team of Gilroy stayed undefeated by defeating Gunn High School 63-46 in the first round of the 25th Annual Aptos Seascape Classic Thursday evening.

Jason Conrad and Derek Jensen led the team in scoring with 16 and 15, respectively. Conrad also had 14 rebounds and three blocks.

“They were actually up 7-0 to start the game,” GHS Assistant Coach Jeremy Dirks said. “We put it on them after that.”

Jacob Dexter had four timely three-pointers and 14 points overall to go with 6 assists, including a no-look pass to Conrad for a dunk in transition.

Lorenzo Dobson was a terror on the boards, collecting 16 rebounds to go with 10 points. Point guard Elijah Harrell did an excellent job of helping to control the tempo, according to Dirks, scoring eight points and handing out five assists.

“We took much better care of the ball” than in our first game, Dirks said.

The team’s next game in the tournament is at 6:30 p.m. tonight against Watsonville (4-1).

Boys Soccer

Gilroy’s varsity boys soccer team remained undefeated by beating Monta Vista 1-0 in the second game of pool play in the Homestead Cup Thursday.

Randy Moya scored a goal in the 17th minute, taking a feed from Carlos Cortez to poke the ball past the keeper on the right side of the net.

GHS Co-Head Coach Armando Padilla said it was an excellent effort by both players, after a steal was passed on to Cortez by GHS’ Daniel Valdez.

Padilla also commended sophomore Clemente Pineda for his ability to fill in for Kevin Grove, who is still playing football, as a central defender.

“[Pineda] came in and did a good job, held down the fort,” Padilla said.

“The second half we managed to keep the tempo, possession of the game, and slow things down,” the coach added.

The team’s next game is 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Leland at Oak Grove High School.
