VANCOUVER, Wash. – Gilroy Little League’s Girls Majors All-Stars stepped out of the pool and into the semifinals Thursday with a 6-4 victory over Utah at the Western Regionals tournament in Vancouver, Wash.
Advancing out of pool play with a 3-1 record, Gilroy, representing Northern California, will now face Washington at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Two more Gilroy victories would result in a trip to the Little League Softball World Series.
Gilroy broke out the bats early against Utah when MacKenzie Mitchell smoked a single to right-center field to start off the bottom of the first inning. Holly Lam’s single put two runners aboard, leading to the bases being loaded when Brittney Souza’s hard-hit grounder wasn’t fielded cleanly.
A Dejah Raoof double to left field brought in the first two runs of the game, and Souza scored on a wild pitch to put Gilroy ahead 3-0.
The second inning provided much of the same as Gilroy’s Karli Martinez led off with a triple over the centerfielder’s head. A single by Mitchell brought Martinez home and a Lauren Castro single plated Mitchell to make the score 5-0.
Gilroy added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Sam Delatorre.
Gilroy had 12 hits in the contest with Lam (4), Castro (3), Mitchell (2) and Raoof (2) leading the way.
Castro went the distance as Gilroy’s pitcher, allowing only two hits while recording 13 strikeouts.
