The Santa Teresa Saints got swept away by all three Gilroy girls volleyball teams Thursday.

The freshman team took care of business 25-13, 25-4; the junior varsity team handled Santa Teresa 25-9, 25-8; and the varsity squad handed the Saints defeat in four games – 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18.

Varsity Mustangs coach Sue Grogan thought her team played a little sloppy, but gave credit to a tough Santa Teresa squad that has seen coaches come and go for the better part of a decade.

“The one thing they do have, they’re definitely scrappy,” Grogan said. “They were digging up a lot of balls and they weren’t giving up. (Gilroy) would slam the ball, the ball would be shanked, and then all of a sudden the next thing (the Mustang players) know, the ball is coming back at them over the net.

“We did OK, I switched some things up,” Grogan continued. “I had one setter that was kind of having an off day, and I had another girl that has been (working on setting) so we had a couple more people that had assists.”

Lindsay Meazell led Gilroy with 21 assists, exactly half of the team’s overall total.

The Mustangs had 49 kills total, with 14 coming from Loryn Ferreira, 13 from Caitlin Chisolm and 8 from Melissa Avila.

All three teams’ next game will be Tuesday at home against Monte Vista Christian. The varsity game will begin at 6:30pm, with JV starting at 5:30 and the freshmen playing at 4:30.
