Gilroy opened up the second half of its league schedule with its most lopsided win of the season Thursday, beating Alvarez 8-0 in Salinas.

But even though the Mustangs found the net frequently, Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said he wasn’t completely happy with the win.

“We were unhappy with our movement and rhythm in the first half,” Hernandez said. “So there were a few things that we needed to work on in the second half.”

The Mustangs were up 5-0 at the half. Ariana Vera led the Mustangs with four goals, and Amanda Bruce and Kristi Figueroa each had two goals. Alicia Reese made just her second career start at goalie.

Gilroy (6-5-3, 3-1-3 TCAL) dominated the game allowing few shots and only two corner kicks.

“It was a needed win,” Hernandez said. “We had a chance to play different positions in the second half. It brought back a little bit of confidence. In the last few games I felt we played really well but we couldn’t score. They are finally starting to learn how to play rather than to react.”

On Saturday, Gilroy will play first-place San Benito. The teams tied at 2-2 last time they met in Hollister.

“We just have to play them like we did last time but not lose our heads,” Hernandez said. “We dominated them in shots and in ball control. We just have to play our ground game, and we’ll be OK.”
