Portland, Ore. – The Western Regional was won with great pitching, spectacular defense and timely hitting. But the Gilroy girls Majors will need to combine all three of these aspects of the game to walk away with the Little League Softball World Series title.

Gilroy will play its first opponent of the tournament, the South squad from Morristown, Tenn., today at 5pm at Alpenrose Field in Portland, Ore. The game can be heard on www.FullAccessSports.com with use of Windows Media Player 9.

This is the third straight year Gilroy has made an appearance at the LLSWS, and the team has experience on its side as it returns four players from last year’s fifth-place squad: Casey Lester, Kaylana Mah, Sarina Sandoval and Celeste M. Jimenez.

The rest of the team has plenty of experience as well, though. All 12 girls play on the Chaos traveling softball club throughout the year.

An additional advantage to the West representatives will be having faced the South’s starting pitcher just a year ago. Gilroy’s manager Dusty Lester said the girl can throw, but is definitely beatable.

“She throws fairly hard, but has a lot of movement on the ball,” he said. “She pitched pretty good against us last year, so we’ll see what happens this year.”

Casey Lester is expected to take the mound for Gilroy in the first game. The team will then play three other contests, with the top two teams in its five-team Group B advancing to the semifinals. There are five teams in Group A which will also send two teams to the semis.

The “final four” will play in televised games on ESPN2 on Aug. 14-15.
