CLEVELAND – Gilroy High graduate Chris Gimenez could make his Major League debut today when the Cleveland Indians take on the New York Yankees at 4 p.m. on ESPN.
Gimenez was called up from Triple-A Columbus early Sunday morning to fill a roster spot left open by outfielder Grady Sizemore going on the 15-day disabled list. A greater need for the Gilroy native, who can play catcher as well as the corner infield and outfield spots, was created when the Indians’ Victor Martinez fouled a ball off his left knee Saturday night, leaving the veteran catcher listed as day-to-day.
Gimenez leaves the Columbus Clippers with a .235 batting average, which doesn’t tell the whole story of how well the 26-year-old has been playing of late. He started the season 0-for-22 at the plate. Since that time, Gimenez has hit eight doubles and six home runs in 39 games for the Clippers.
If Gimenez does take the field today, he will become just the second person from Gilroy to play in an MLB game. GHS alum Frank LaCorte pitched for 10 seasons (1975-84) in the Big Leagues.
