GHS returns to the court tonight.
The Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team shook off the first-game cobwebs, catching fire in the second half and delivering a 53-39 victory over Watsonville in the first round of the Gilroy Mustangs Classic on Thursday night.
Senior Chelsea Hill recorded a double-double, posting 15 points and corralling 16 rebounds. Ashlee Williams contributed 13 points and Michelle Sosa had 12.
The host Mustangs weathered a sluggish start, falling behind 12-10 in the first quarter. However, the Mustangs found their footing and grabbed control of the ball game in the third, taking a 38-25 advantage into the fourth.
“We played well in the third quarter both offensively and defensively with more intensity and determination,” said head coach Tim Jones, who attributed the slow first half to a case of the jitters.
