GILROY – Many teams would shy away from the challenge of facing the reigning Central Coast Section Division I champions in their first game of the season.
But that’s not what the Gilroy High girls varsity team did as they hosted Monta Vista on Friday night.
Despite outplaying the Matadors in the second half, the Mustangs were unable to finish many runs and find the back of the net in a 3-0 loss to open up the 2009-10 season.
“We played well and we did what we can,” said junior midfielder Indra Garcia. “We still have to fix some mistakes but for our first real game we did well.”
Both teams had speed at the forward postition which provided for a number of offensive surges.
“I thought we played better in the second half even though technically it was 2-0 in that half compared to 1-0 in the first,” head coach Jose Hernandez said. “We fixed teh little things we talked about at the half. Part of it is overcoming our nerves.
“It wasn;t bad. It’s December and we have only been together for a couple weeks. It’s a work in progress.”
