GILROY – A 5-0 drubbing of Alisal on Wednesday night gave the Gilroy High girls soccer team its 13th win in a row, including 10 straight in the Tri-County Athletic League, setting up a showdown with San Benito for the outright TCAL title tonight in Gilroy.

“I hate losing to anyone, especially Hollister,” head coach Jose Hernandez said. “That’s what we have been talking about.”

A 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Balers in last year’s finale still gives Hernandez the shivers, but he expects his team to continue to do the little things correct in order to preserve an undefeated league season.

“We just have to focus on our individual skills and eliminate the individual mistakes,” Hernandez said.

The Balers are on a five-game winning tear of their own and have recorded victories in 11 of their last 12 outings. The lone loss was a 3-0 decision against the Mustangs on Jan. 27.

If the Balers beat the Mustangs the two rivals would share the TCAL crown.

“Right now, we have very good team chemistry,” Hernandez said. “We are in that mode.”

The Mustangs are in search of their fourth consecutive league championship.

Gilroy’s offense is at times unstoppable. With a combination of speed and ball control, the Mustangs have outscored TCAL opponents 48-2 in 11 games – quite a feat considering they have played many games with just one or two players available for substitutions.

First kick is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

Tonight is also Senior Night for the Mustangs, who have just one on their roster. Rahni Giardina, a four-year starter for Gilroy who missed the first half of the season with a broken clavicle, will make her final regular-season appearance in the blue and white.
