HAYWARD – Two Silicon Valley Glory fast-pitch softball teams brought home trophies from the United States Specialty Sports Association Tournament held in Hayward Nov. 15 and 16. The 18-and-Under Gold team took first place, while the 11-and-Under team was able to finish second.
Going undefeated all weekend, the 18-and-Under Glory won the championship game by topping the Modesto Slammers 5-1.
Shortstop Alissa Castro went 4-for-4 and Jasmine Perez hit a triple and two singles.
Other players who contributed timely hits over the course of the weekend included: Elaina Vazquez, Adrianna Osuna, Lindsay Holt, Emily Castro, Melanie Morelos, Samantha Parraz and Ashley Harrington.
As the Glory’s pitcher, Parraz picked up the victory.
Over the weekend, the team’s top batters were Perez (.700), Alissa Castro (.563) and Emily Castro (.467). The defense was equally solid.
Emily Castro, playing left field, had the best moment, in particular.
With the bases loaded and one out, a hard line drive was crushed over Castro’s head, but she was still able to catch the ball over her shoulder while on the run. She then fired the ball to second base for a double play.
The 11-and-Under team went 2-2 on the weekend, coming up just short of a victory in the championship game against the Milpitas Renegade after winning a thrilling game semifinal contest 10-9.
Led by MacKenzie Holt’s (three hits) and Emily Boykin’s (two hits) in the semifinal, Glory also received excellent pitching performances by Alli Hathaway and Holt.
Michaela Decker was the Glory’s leading hitter in the 8-4 championship game defeat.
For the tournament, the team was led by Hathaway and Decker, who both had five hits. Overall, the team had a .328 batting average and on-base percentage of .516. It is the last tournament of the fall for the team, which will be spreading its roster throughout Gilroy Little League next spring.
