While I reside far from the Gilroy area, I must take issue with the May 13 editorial (Unions Hold Gilroy Hostage).
You have it backwards. As the nation’s largest private employer, Wal-Mart has the power to set wages wherever it opens a store. If the goal is to lower the standard of living for the entire area – drive on Gilroy. Local merchants will close, and wages will trend downward. The same is true in construction.
So make the choice, unions and better wages, or Wal-Mart and more people eligible for Medicaid and food stamps while working full time. And yes I’m writing from a union house, two full-time union jobs in education and we still qualify for limited Medicaid in Seattle. At least we just use it for kids’ co-pays, at Wal-Mart it is the insurance of choice.
