One bad game and ‘Stang fans react
Caller 1: I was just wondering….hey, doesn’t anybody else agree….with the Mustangs down 25-8, why would they leave Peter Mickartz to stay on the field during halftime for a 10-second announcement that he was Mr. Mustang, especially during a Homecoming game that they were down at? Maybe the final score would’ve been different if he had participated in the halftime with his team.
Green Phone: We were just wondering … hey, doesn’t anybody else agree … why would anyone blame this loss on just one player, especially a player that was plagued by nine dropped passes? Whatever. It wasn’t just the receivers, either. Pete didn’t even mention them after the game. Like the rest of the guys, he knows you win as a team and you lose as a team. Salinas was simply the better team last week. Nothing that happened at halftime could change that fact.
Caller 2: I read an article a few weeks ago and a Gilroy High Mustangs’ player – I believe his name was Shea Lemos – was quoted after the Palma game as saying our high school football team will go down in history and when people think of Gilroy High School football, they’re going to think of this team. And at the time I read it, I thought it was an insult to every other Gilroy High football player that’s ever played in years past. Now I think it’s interesting that the team sits in third place and is probably one loss from falling to fourth place. Um, I just found it interesting that the team is not going to go down in history. And I think the coach should let his players know ‘you guys are good, but you’re not THAT good.’ And make sure these guys aren’t getting overcocky, because a statement like that is absurd. You’ve gotta watch what you say sometimes. Anyway, I thought there was a lesson to be learned there. Some of these players should realize that they’re not as great as they think they are.
Green Phone: Wow … uuuh … uuum … Green Phone is speechless. We can assure you the Edge is not, though. Brett promises to share his views on this matter in tommorrow’s column. Stay tuned.
Caller 3: This is for Brett Edgerton. OK, I enjoy the work you’re doing with sports … I especially like the column about Latrell Sprewell. You hit in the nail right on the head as far as I’m concerned. He’s not the only one, but it makes us 9-to-5’ers cringe from time to time. As far as I’m concerned, there’s too many athletes and rock stars that don’t know how to handle the fame and money. Thanks for listening.
Green Phone: Thanks for reading, Caller 3. It’s good to know someone out there is more repulsed by a pro athlete worth millions whining about an offer of 10 mill a year than by a high school athlete that’s proud of his team after an historic victory.
