JV Gymnasts Going Strong

The Gilroy High gymnastics team doesn’t have the numbers for a varsity team, but its JV team is strong – 30 strong.

On Wednesday, the JV squad improved to 2-0 on the season as a team with a 171-117 win over Cupertino at Gilroy High.

“(The JV) is looking really strong,” said Gilroy head coach Nikki Anagnoston. “Gymnastics is kind of a different sport in the sense that at the high school level, it’s a little tougher to make the jump to the varsity level just because it’s such a highly specialized sport.”

For that reason, the Mustang varsity didn’t post a team score. But Gilroy did receive a first-place performance from its lone competitor, senior Chelsea Garcia. She took first in her only event, the floor exercise, with an 8.2.

“(Garcia’s) actually doing very well right now. She will be very consistent. Right now, she’s just starting off on floor and eventually she’ll go to three events on beam and bar,” Anagnoston said. “Our goal with Chelsea is just to qualify her for CCS as an individual.”

On the JV side, Anagnoston said junior Amber Mindler, sophomore Veronica Kelly and sophomore Shannon Hubbard – all returnees from last year’s team – have been the mainstays.

“Those three are very consistent, with first and seconds on every event,” Anagnoston said. “They’re really looking good for the season.”

Against Cupertino, Mindler took first in the all-around with a 33.85 and Hubbard took second with a 32.85.

Kelly’s near-flawless vault performance earner her a first-place 9.8.

“That was an amazing score,” Anagnoston said. “That was her PR.”

Kelly also took first in the beam with an 8.9.

The gymnastics team heads to Tracy this Saturday, to St. Francis April 26 and hosts Los Altos April 27.

Boys’ Golf Has Disappointing Meet, Hurts CCS Chances

The Mustangs needed to beat either Palma or Salinas – the leaders of the Tri-County Athletic League – to help their chances of making the Central Coast Section meet. But that didn’t happen, thanks to few nasty holes.

“We’ve been playing seven or eight great holes and one total blow-up hole kind of kills your ability to score well,” said Gilroy head coach Kari Williams. “I think that’s been kind of the thing hurting us all season.”

At the triangular held at Gilroy’s Eagle Ridge Golf Course, Williams had one player take a 10 on a par-5 and another triple a par-3. Scores like those resulted in a Gilroy team score of 217.

Palma won the meet with a 192 and Salinas took second with a 210.

Palma’s Cory Donnelly and Salinas’ Ken Munro shared medalist honors with scores of 35.

Jami Binowski (42) and Chad Wilson (43) led Gilroy. Jordan Miller, Stephen Freeth, Estevan Gonzalez and Ryan Clark each shot 44s.

Thursday’s performance puts Gilroy one and a half points behind third-place San Benito in the overall TCAL standings. A third-place finish guarantees a CCS berth.

“We have to beat San Benito April 27 and at the league finals to get a berth at CCS,” Williams said. “All is not lost yet, but were going to have to play some good golf.”

Boys’ Volleyball vs. Seaside Postponed

Due to a gym conflict, the Gilroy boys’ volleyball team did not play its match against Seaside Thursday. It will be rescheduled for later date in April. The 17-6 Mustangs play this weekend at the Harbor Tourney.
