GILROY – Let the magic begin.

The much-anticipated “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” opens in South County today, but the boy wizard’s second film adventure will have its work cut out for it if it plans to surpass its predecessor.

As the movie opens around the country, it will be shown on even more screens in more theaters than “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” did a year ago. “Chamber of Secrets” was set to open in a record 3,682 theaters, 10 more than the “Sorcerer’s Stone” and play on a record 8,500 screens, up about 400 over the first film.

In South County, the film will be showing on three screens at Gilroy’s Platinum Theaters, 6851 Monterey Road, and on two screens at Cinema Six, 750 Tennant Station Way in Morgan Hill. Platinum’s evening showings of the film are at 5:20, 6, 7:45, 8:50 and 9:15 p.m. Cinema Six has showings at 6:30, 7, 9:45 and 10:15 p.m., and will open up bright and early at 9 a.m. Saturday to begin another full day of showings.

But even distributor Warner Bros. conceded “Chamber of Secrets” may have a hard time equaling the $90.3 million opening weekend of “Sorcerer’s Stone.”

The sequel also is opening in eight other countries Friday.
