CARMEL – Carmel was the perfect cure for Gilroy High’s boys basketball blues.

Coming off back-to-back losses at the 26th Annual Aptos Seascape Classic, Gilroy bounced back Tuesday with a 57-35 victory over the hosting Padres to regain a winning record at 3-2.

“We started out in a tough defense and we came energized, which I was hoping for,” Gilroy coach Jeremy Dirks said.

Jumping out to a 17-2 advantage after the first period, the Mustangs continued building on their lead in the second quarter to lead 27-9 at halftime.

Tyler Hartman led all scorers with 20 points to go with eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. It was by far his best performance of the season, and one Dirks has been waiting to see after predicting in the preseason that Hartman could be a contender for Tri-County Athletic League MVP.

“I was really pleased with Tyler Hartman,” he said. “I’m glad he proved (what he can do) to himself because we need him.”

Gilroy point guard Elijah Harrell had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists, and Greg Hamik and Dolopo Opere both added four points and eight rebounds.

Dirks noted that each player on the roster contributed to the win, especially Shawn Aguilar, Jordan Cania and Michael Aldridge, who each brought a high level of intensity off the bench.

“There was more energy tonight, more consistency and it showed,” Dirks said.

The Mustangs will be back on the court Friday at 7 p.m. at Seaside.
