About 1,000 people gathered under sunny skies to watch Gilroy’s youth show off their skateboarding and BMX skills. Extreme Youth organizers and sponsors gave out hundreds of prizes to participants, including skateboards, T-shirts and bike parts. Ascencion Solorsano Middle School sixth grader Edwin Castaneda walked away with the day’s grand prize, a week-long trip to Camp Woodward, a BMX and skateboarding camp in Southern California.
“It’s every teenagers’ dream,” said Gilroy Police Officer Mark Tarasco, one of the event’s organizers. “We wanted to give it to the kid with the biggest heart.”
The event also gave out prizes to winners in each age category for both events and to the winner of the best trick contest. Organizers couldn’t have pulled off the event without the help of Steve Ashford and other local companies who donated their time, equipment and prizes, Ashford said.
