Gilroy – Highway 152, which has been closed for a week due to excessive rain, opened to motorists Friday evening.
The roadway opened about 5pm and will remain open, weather permitting, said Caltrans Spokesman Jim Shivers.
The highway, a major artery to the coast, was closed April 5 because of a “roadway slipout,” when the soil underneath the road gave way along with the concrete. Shivers said Caltrans finished up some paving Friday morning.
Two days of dry weather allowed Caltrans to finish the work, but more inclement weather is on tap for today and Easter Sunday. Showers are expected to return starting tonight and taper off Sunday night.
It should be dry Monday through Thursday but their may be another bout of rain on Friday, said National Weather Service Spokesman Bob Benjamin.
Still, don’t fret over the possibility of sprinkles at the end of the week.
“I don’t think the one on Friday will put us back into this period of prolonged rain,” Benjamin said. “We should be back into our more normal pattern, with some rains. It is still April.”
In Gilroy, during the next couple of week, highs should be around the mid-70s with lows in the 40s and partly cloudy skies intermixed with brief periods of rain.
