“Hit it thin to win” is a saying that a lot of golfers use. I believe it has evolved simply because it’s counterpart the “fat” shot, which I talked about last week, is a sure way not to win.

A thin shot often still gets to its intended target whether that is down the fairway or on the green, but ususally not with the same velocity. Far and away a thin shot is much better than a fat shot, but it is still not what you should be striving to do.

Most thin shots are caused because your head is too far in front of the ball at impact. This causes you to hit the ball on the decending arc (which is good), but you often hit it in the middle or equator of the ball.

Your head can be too far in front of the ball for a couple of reasons. First, you could slide your upper body too much and this causes you to get too far out in front of the ball. Secondly, you could just be simply playing the ball too far back in your stance. This automatically puts your head in front of the ball.

To correct this just simply move the ball forward towards the target and try to keep your head as steady as possible during the swing. You should start striking the ball on the downswing and hitting the back of the ball with the face of the club not hitting the middle of the ball with the edge.
