Dear Editor:

St. Joseph’s Family Center would like to take this time to thank the many individuals and businesses that made Thanksgiving and Christmas special to the 700-plus families we served during the holiday season.

The difficult economy that we are experiencing, including rising unemployment and cuts to social service programs, have put the demand for our services at an all-time high. Despite this reality, the local community once again came through with extraordinary displays of generosity.

One could fill this paper with stories of how the broad spectrum of our community participated in making our work so successful. Here is just a small example: The Todd Jones Family, for hundreds of food and toy boxes donated each year; the Emeth Congregation, for preparing a wonderful meal for the homeless on Christmas Day; The San Jose Mercury News, for their gift of books and participation in the 2003 Wish Book; Marge Albaugh/Tim & Janice Filice/Gilroy Fire Department for organizing our toy drive; The McDevitt Family, whose children donated coins they saved all year long; First Baptist Church, for their beautiful facility to house our Christmas Sharing Program; The Gilroy Dispatch, for their genuine concern and coverage of many non-profit organization events in our area; South County Realtors Association, Gilroy Elks Lodge, Gilroy Rotary Club, Boy Scouts, Automobile Association of America, Luigi Aprea School and hundreds of other timely donations from our loyal supporters and friends.

It is impossible to describe how much this unconditional support means to our work at St. Joseph’s. We are blessed and fortunate that this compassion is shared not only when we need it the most, but year-round as well.

Last but not least, our humble and sincere thanks to our volunteers. The contribution of their talents and time can never be appreciated enough.

Best wishes to all for a joyous, peaceful New Year!

David Cox, Director, St. Joseph’s Family Center, Gilroy
