The low angle sun, earlier evenings and dew in the morning warn us that fall is in the air. Along with gathering in the harvest from the garden it’s time to make a few plans about “winter proofing” the garden.
nUse a triple 12 fertilizer on deciduous fruit trees in the fall to encourage a better overall growth and fruit production in the spring. Apply it in October or early November when the trees in question have lost their leaves.
nProtect frost tender plants in the garden with a product called Cloud Cover. Spray the leaves of the plant thoroughly on both sides to seal in moisture. This will help the plant survive those colder night temperatures we can get in the fall.
Cloud Cover is available in a ready to use container or a water-soluble concentrate.
nChange fertilizers for many of your shrubs this month. Azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias need monthly applications of 0-10-10 to insure good bud set for the spring. Citrus need regular feedings with citrus fertilizer to help protect them from frost damage.
nFeed the yard with an application of general purpose fertilizer this fall. It’s great for everything you grow.
And it’s a terrific source of organic nitrogen, which will release slowly through the fall and feed trees and shrubs right up to their dormant periods.
